    A good solid camera.

I am retired so there isn't much money spare for my photography hobby. This EOS 40D is a step up from my old EOS20D, so I had accessories, lenses and battery grip already. Although modern cameras have twice the pixel count and other features, this camera is capable of producing landscape photographs up to A3 size, provided I do not have to crop too severely Consequently I have to rely on my own skill rather than letting the camera think for me. The EOS 40D is a solidly built machine. It is suitable for a novice but will exploit your growing skill level by allowing fully manual operation when you feel confident. This is a real bargain on which to learn the basics, when you have the cash to move up to a more modern machine your skill will match your new equipment. I have had loads of ...

    Cannon EOS 40D difficuties

I bought this camera as an upgrade to my EOS 100 Rebel. It took me awhile to workout the controls etc. One of the main reasons to go for the EOS 40D was because in the camera specification that it was Wi-Fi ready. On receipt I was surprised to find that in fact it was not Wi-Fi enabled or ready. I contacted to seller who said that the specification was supplied by EBAY and that the camera was not Wi-Fi ready or enabled. I decided to keep the camera however. I used the camera and took some landscape shots. I found that the blacks on the prints were distorted and the focus points actually appeared on one of the shots. It maybe that I am not fully conversant with this camera, but using the Auto setting should make it virtually fool proof but not in this case. Not for me I will used for part ...

  • Ultimate work horse at a fraction of its original retail cost

These were very expensive upon release (circa £1000 if I remember correctly) and despite being an older model it is very responsive and powerful with intuitive controls and, lets face it, other than the megapixel count (and maybe ISO) how different has DSLR photography got in 10 or so years? There's still a great range of amazing Canon lenses and accessories and if you can live without touchscreen, wifi, and all that jazz then this is a no-brainer. An absolute bargain, a joy to use, and built like a tank.

  • Great camera from Cannon. Long in the tooth now but still excellent

I am a professional photographer (http://www.andrew-miller.co.uk) and required a backup body as an emergency whilst one of my own backups was being repaired. I have used the 40D in the past and consider it to be excellent value for money. The screen is a little soft on the back; but that is more to do with the cameras age. Overall it is an excellent camera. The crop sensor takes some getting used to after using full size but to be honest it also offers me that bit extra range on my 70-200mm!! The high speed shoot mode is also excellent - great for confetti shots and the first kiss. File size is good; you will be able to use a 8Gb card all day no problem I was intending to sell the body on but am now going to keep it. It is a cheaper alternative to the 50D or the 7D for a ...

  • SuperB value sports camera at bargain price.

I think it used to cost something around £1100 body only when it came to the market towards the end of 2007. You can get one in superb condition for around £150 nowadays. In lags behind his modern successors in some respect, especially in high ISO performance a bit, but it also costs much less than these and the operation is still super speedy with USM and similar lenses. It is a pleasure to use with great controls layout and you can get some truly spectacular lenses for very little like the new 50 1.8 STM which is mega sharp for its use price around £100. The build is solid and sturdy, no creaks at all. Add a Yognuo or similar speedlite for around £50 and you have proper semi-profi setup which will give you profi results.
